There is a different kind of Halkidiki waiting beyond the familiar beach bars, crowded summer resorts and well-known holiday destinations. It is found in the little fishing harbours where boats gently sway with the afternoon breeze, in secluded coves hidden between pine-covered hills, in traditional tavernas where the day’s catch is the star of the menu, and on stretches of coastline where the water is so clear that the boats appear to be floating in the air.
This five-day escape takes you on a journey through the beautiful coastline of Halkidiki, combining the turquoise waters of Sithonia, the island atmosphere of Ammouliani, authentic seaside villages and some of the region’s most memorable coastal experiences.
The idea: less rushing and more discovering. Five days of swimming, sailing, local food and the simple pleasure of experiencing Greece at its own pace. We all know that Halkidiki can offer literally all, but this itinerary is for those who want to experience it beyond the beach bars and to discover its quieter and more authentic side.

Your route through Halkidiki
The itinerary is designed as a coastal road trip, with two accommodation bases to avoid unnecessary hotel changes.
Before you go: the perfect base
Rather than changing accommodation every night, I recommend dividing your stay between two areas.
-
Nights 1–2: Ammouliani or Ouranoupoli. This gives you easy access to the island, the Drenia islets and the Athos coastline.
-
Nights 3–4: Vourvourou or Ormos Panagias. This is your base for exploring Diaporos, the eastern coastline and the beaches of Sithonia.
A rental car is strongly recommended in case you don’t have your own. The ferry to Ammouliani departs from Tripiti, and the crossing takes approximately 10–15 minutes.
THE FIVE-DAY ITINERARY
DAY 1 – Ammouliani: An Island Escape
Morning: Leave the mainland behind
Start your journey from Thessaloniki and drive towards Tripiti, the small port connecting the mainland with Ammouliani. The ferry crossing is very short, but it feels like the beginning of a different kind of holiday.

As the island approaches, you will notice its small harbour, traditional houses and beautiful shades of blue surrounding the coastline. Once you arrive, check into your accommodation (I strongly recommend Aiora villas) and head out to explore.

Late morning: First swim at Alykes
Your first stop should be Alykes Beach. If you stay at Aiora villas, you will reach it walking. If not, you will park somewhere close and access it directly. Alykes is one of the island’s best-known beaches, with soft sand and beautiful shallow turquoise water. It is a lovely place to spend a few hours swimming and enjoying the island atmosphere. My suggestion: arrive earlier in the day, especially in July and August, when the popular organised beach bars become busy. What you can expect is a minimum consumption in exchange for an umbrella (which varies in terms of an amount, depending on distance from the sea).

Lunch :A taste of island life
Return towards Ammouliani village for a leisurely seafood lunch. Look for a traditional family-run taverna and order things like grilled fresh fish (depending on the catch), fried calamari. Greek salad with local olive oil., grilled octopus. a glass of chilled ouzo, if you drink alcohol. The island has a strong fishing tradition, making fresh seafood an important part of its identity. If you are in a mood for meat meals, I would also recommend Klimataria, it is an old traditional restaurant that offers tasty meat options (and is very budget-friendly).

Afternoon: Karagatsia beach
Continue to Karagatsia Beach for another swim. It offers a lovely setting for a slower afternoon by the sea.

Evening : a little island romance
Take a walk around Ammouliani’s harbour, explore its small streets and enjoy dinner overlooking the water. I recommend Tzanis restaurant, you can have an amazing view and absolutely glorious food. Don’t plan too much. This is the day to slow down.

DAY 2 – The Drenia Islets: Greece’s Little Caribbean
If there is one experience I would absolutely include in this itinerary, it is a boat trip to the Drenia Islets. Located just off the coast of Ammouliani, this small island group is known for its beautiful turquoise water, sandy shores and almost tropical scenery.
Morning: set sail
After breakfast, head to Ammouliani’s harbour and arrange a boat excursion. You have two main options:
-
Join an organised boat excursion.
-
Hire a small boat, with or without a skipper, depending on the operator’s requirements and your experience.
Some smaller boats can be rented without a boating licence, subject to applicable rules and the rental operator’s instructions.

Late morning: explore the islets
Spend the morning swimming, snorkelling and discovering the little coves. The Drenia group includes several small islets, some with very limited facilities. This is exactly why I recommend bringing your own essentials.
Pack things like:
-
Snorkelling equipment.
-
Plenty of drinking water.
-
Sunscreen and a hat.
-
A light picnic.
-
A waterproof phone pouch.
-
A beach towel.
Lunch: a picnic by the sea
Instead of returning to a busy beach restaurant, consider a picnic on an appropriate accessible beach area.
Afternoon: discover Ammouliani’s village
Return to the island and spend some time exploring the village. One particularly interesting stop is the Ammouliani Folklore Museum. The island’s modern community has roots in Greek refugees who arrived from Proikonisos in Asia Minor. Its history adds another layer to what might initially seem like just a beautiful beach destination. If you have time.

Evening: your last night on the island
Enjoy a relaxed dinner, perhaps trying a local seafood speciality you haven’t tasted yet.
DAY 3 – Ouranoupoli to Vourvourou: From the Athos Coast to Sithonia
Morning: discover Ouranoupoli
After breakfast, take the ferry back to the mainland and drive to Ouranoupoli. This charming coastal village is the gateway to Mount Athos, one of Greece’s most fascinating spiritual and historical regions. Take a walk around the village and admire the Byzantine Prosphorion Tower, one of its most recognisable landmarks. If time allows, consider a boat cruise along the coastline of Mount Athos. These cruises offer views of the monasteries from the sea. Remember that access to the monastic territory itself is restricted.

Lunch: seafood by the harbour
Enjoy a meal at Zorbas Fish & Seafood Tavern.

Afternoon: drive towards Sithonia
Continue towards the second peninsula of Halkidiki. Your destination is Vourvourou Bay. The landscape changes as you travel south: pine forests meet the sea, small coves appear along the coast and offshore islands create a beautiful natural setting. Check into your second accommodation base.

Evening: sunset and relaxation
Spend the evening enjoying the quieter side of Vourvourou. Have dinner nearby and prepare for tomorrow’s highlight: exploring Diaporos by boat.
DAY 4 – Diaporos: The Turquoise Lagoon of Sithonia
Today is all about the sea. Diaporos is a small island just off the eastern coast of Sithonia. Its surrounding waters are famous for their shallow turquoise sections, rocky coves and little sandy beaches.

Morning: rent a boat in Vourvourou
After breakfast, head to Vourvourou and arrange a boat excursion. For a self-drive experience, one option is Yolo Rent a Boat (I personally recommend this brand, but there are many others as well). Alternatively, arrange a private cruise with a skipper if you prefer someone else to navigate. Allow most of the day for this experience.
The stops you shouldn’t miss:
- Blue lagoon: one of the most recognisable swimming areas around Diaporos, known for its luminous blue-green water and shallow sandy sections.
- Eagle rock: a beautiful rocky swimming spot with exceptionally clear water. It is a small natural cove rather than a developed beach, so don’t expect facilities or much shade.
- The hidden coves: explore smaller bays around the island, stopping where conditions and access permit. These quieter corners are often the most memorable part of the day.

Lunch: your own little beach picnic
Bring food and drinks from the mainland. Do not assume that the small coves or islands have restaurants, shops or toilets. Still, there is an amazing floating bar in the lagoon, Tiki bar, that can serve you drinks while being on the boat directly.

Afternoon: swim, snorkel and enjoy the freedom
Take your time. There is no need to rush from one stop to another.
A word of caution: follow the boat rental operator’s navigation instructions, respect shallow water and anchoring restrictions, and keep well clear of swimming areas and other boats!!!
Evening: a quiet dinner in Sithonia
Return your boat and enjoy dinner in Vourvourou or nearby Ormos Panagias.
DAY 5 – The wild beauty of Southern Sithonia
Your final day is dedicated to the dramatic coastline of southern Sithonia. This is a day for scenic drives, beautiful swimming spots and one last long Greek lunch. Sithonia has so much to offer and it definitely deserves an itinerary and a trip just for exploring this area, but for the current plan, only a small part of it was chosen.
Morning: discover Kavourotrypes
Start early and drive towards Kavourotrypes Beach. Also known as Orange Beach, this coastline is famous for its white sculpted rocks, little sandy coves and extraordinary shades of turquoise. It is one of the most photogenic locations in Halkidiki. My recommendation is to arrive early, bring water shoes and explore the coastline carefully. The small coves can become crowded in peak summer.

Late morning: continue towards Porto Koufo
Continue south to Porto Koufo. This impressive natural harbour is surrounded by hills and has a wonderfully different atmosphere from the open beaches of Sithonia. It is a working fishing village, making it a lovely place to experience another side of Greek coastal life.

Lunch: final seafood feast
Have lunch in Pefkos, a traditional fish taverna overlooking the harbour. Order whatever is fresh that day, accompanied by a few Greek appetisers and a long, leisurely lunch.

Afternoon: one last swim
Enjoy a final swim at Porto Koufo Beach or, if you prefer a more open coastline, continue to nearby Toroni. Porto Koufo is particularly appealing when you want calm water and a more sheltered setting. Some areas have rocky entries and the water can become deep quickly, so choose your swimming spot carefully.
Evening: the journey back
Begin your return journey, carrying with you five days of beautiful beaches, little discoveries and the feeling that you have experienced a different version of Halkidiki.
